Congressman Sessions Appointed Chairman of Oversight Subcommittee
February 1, 2023
Washington D.C.– U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX-17), a senior member of the House Oversight & Accountability Committee, was appointed by Chairman James Comer (R-KY-01) as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce. The subcommittee has oversight and legislative jurisdiction over the federal civil services, government organizations and operations, and the relationship between the federal government to the states and municipalities, including but not limited to compensation, classification, public information, records, and transparency.
“I would first like to thank Chairman Comer for his vote of confidence in appointing me as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce,” said Congressman Sessions. “I share the same level of confidence in his leadership of the full committee.
The conduct and transparency of federal agencies and services nationwide is a priority issue for the American people, and has been egregiously ignored by the previous Democrat-led Oversight & Reform Committee. This subcommittee will be at the forefront of challenging and ensuring the federal government will be dutiful, efficient, and present for the American people. Taxpayers should have confidence in the democratic process and know that the government is working in their best interest. I will be bringing many unresolved issues before the committee to finally settle.
Given recent disturbing news about the mishandling and misplacement of classified documents, I believe there are significant reforms to be made to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to ensure that sensitive information and regulations are always followed without compromising national security. The Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce is well placed to hold NARA accountable and bring necessary reforms to the information classification system. Further, this subcommittee will conduct vigorous oversight over the discovery and processing of classified documents in the homes and offices of President Biden and other government officials.
My charge as Chairman will be to challenge the federal government and make sure they are working for the American people. Public trust in our federal institutions is at a historic low, in large part due to unaccountable and ineffective bureaucracy. I believe sunlight is the best disinfectant to restore faith in our federal government. The Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce will work tirelessly to ensure the government is operating ethically and efficiently for the American taxpayer."
House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer gave his full support to Congressman Pete Sessions, “Republicans will use all the tools at our disposal to make sure our federal government is more efficient, effective, and transparent to the American people. Chairman Pete Sessions leadership on the Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce to ensure the federal government is held accountable, bring transparency to government operations, and ensure federal agencies are meeting their missions.”
