Brazos Transit District, July 5– Congressman Pete Sessions (TX-17) announced today that the House Appropriations Transportation Subcommittee included in its FY 2023 report $865,000 for the Connecting Communities Through Bus Stop Infrastructure project. The funds will allow for the creation of additional bus shelters and designated stops in the key communities of College Station, Bryan, Lufkin and Nacogdoches.
“This project will be a valuable use of taxpayer funds because modernization of this transit system through the addition of shelters and designated stops is a low-cost and highly visible way to improve the infrastructure for ADA accessibility on the roadways,” Sessions said.
CEO and general manager of Brazos Transit District, John McBeth, on behalf of the Brazos Transit District Board of Directors, said, “We appreciate the efforts of Congressman Sessions to secure federal funding that will provide bus shelters and stops that will truly modernize the transit systems in Bryan/College Station, Lufkin and Nacogdoches. This funding will allow us to evolve past the antiquated flag stop system, improve safety for the traveling public and transit users alike, improve reliability of the transit services and allow the Brazos Transit District to continue to expand service to meet local demands.”
The funds are in the Appropriations Subcommittee FY 23 report language at Sessions request; both the Subcommittee Chair David Price (NC-4) and Vice Chair Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25) supported Sessions’ request.
“I was to thank the Chair and the Vice Chair for supporting these funds in the Brazos Transit Area, since it will also benefit the overall workforce and economy in the district,” Sessions concluded.
Sessions secured 12 of 15 projects he requested for Texas 17 in the FY 2023 Appropriations Subcommittee reports. While the bill must still pass the full committee; the House and Senate, Appropriations bills are annually “must-pass” legislation.
