Sessions' Response to Biden Administration's Taiwan Defense Policy Non-Clarification

May 13, 2021

For Immediate Release: May 12, 2021

Congressman Sessions (TX-17) made the following statement in response to comments made on May 4, 2021, by the White House Asia Czar, Kurt Campbell, regarding the United States' policy toward defending Taiwan.

"I was disappointed to see that the Biden administration will not clearly articulate the United States' position of our support for Taiwan, given the vigorous and unprofessional actions taken by Chinese military aggression. I join with House Foreign Affairs Committee's Republican leaders, Congressmen Michael McCaul and Steve Chabot, in offerings words of a concern that missteps could be made by the Chinese to second guess a lack of full support for Taiwan's sovereignty and safety. Quiet support is not enough. A new administration has a responsibility to assert its policy. China should not question a long-term relationship with such an important ally."
