The Hill Report: Week of November 7 - 11, 2016
Today we honor our nation’s veterans, from the soldiers who heeded the call to battle in World War I, to the members of the greatest generation who stormed the beaches of Normandy, to all of the brave men and women who have fought to preserve our freedom both at home and abroad. We are indebted to our veterans for their unwavering service and continued commitment to protecting our great nation. I join North Texans and all Americans in offering my sincerest appreciation for their sacrifice and service.
Meetings with North Texans
Dallas Navy League Council
On Monday I was delighted to meet with Dallas Navy League Council President Bob Whitlock and Vice President of Legislative Affairs for the Lone Star Region Doug Crawford for a substantive discussion about the legislative challenges facing Congress and projects we can work on in support of our Sea Service funding and building a stronger military. Founded in 1902 with the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, the Navy League is now comprised of 39,000 civilians in more than 220 councils around the world working to support sea service members and their families. In their mission to enhance the morale of active-duty personnel and their families, inform Congress and the American public on the importance of strong sea services, and support America's future through youth sea service programs, the Navy League provides an invaluable service to our country and our maritime interests. As your Member of Congress, I am proud to continue my work with the Navy League to help our country and military grow and prosper.

Texas Retailers Association "Hero of Main Street"
This week I was honored to receive the "Hero of Main Street" award from the Texas Retailers Association. Throughout my career, I have fought to roll back the onerous regulations imposed on our economy by unelected bureaucrats in Washington and unleash the free-enterprise system. I applaud the Texas Retailers Association for their commitment to ensuring that our state's retailers have a voice in Austin and Washington, and I will continue to do my part to stand up for them in our nation's capital.

Texans with Responsible Tax Reform
Our tax system is a tangled web of complicated rules and regulations, skyrocketing compliance costs, and mounds of paperwork. This week I had the opportunity to discuss our onerous tax code with Texans with Responsible Tax Reform. We discussed how our system has imposed an unfortunate reality that hinders economic growth, forces jobs overseas, and puts American taxpayers last, when they should be first. We also talked about the importance of preserving the cash basis method accounting of accounting for dentists, farmers and ranchers, physicians, architects, and the other job creators that rely on it.

I believe that we need to make the tax code simpler, fairer, and flatter, so that it’s not only easier to do your taxes, but it’s also easier to have peace of mind at critical moments in life. Our tax code should make it easier to create jobs, raise wages, and expand opportunity for all Americans. If any provisions don’t accomplish this goal, they should be eliminated.
