Sessions on House Passing Gov’t Takeover of Healthcare

March 21, 2010
Press Release

Washington, DC – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions today released the following statement in response to House Democrats passing the Senate healthcare bill for a government-takeover of healthcare:

“This is a sad day for America. Defying the undeniable voice of the American people, Democrats in Congress have passed a poison pill of government-run healthcare with higher costs, more taxes, fewer choices, and government interference in the physician-patient relationship.

“American families will pay higher premiums. Individuals and small businesses will face higher taxes if they purchase insurance — and if they do not. Seniors will have fewer choices in Medicare. And the federal government will establish over 70 new bureaucracies with the power to determine the future of healthcare in our nation. On top of these adversities, millions of Americans will lose their jobs because Democrats in Congress continue to assault the free enterprise system with more taxes and more mandates.

“House Democrats used dishonest process to pass a reckless political agenda. Never before has the House of Representatives disgraced itself with such vote-buying and backroom deals to circumvent true representational government. Despite Democrat promises to be the most open, honest, and ethical Congress in history, the American people have seen their healthcare freedom bought and sold to achieve the radical political ambitions of President Obama and Democrats in Congress.

“This government-takeover is not the end of the battle — but another beginning in the fight for freedom in healthcare. I want to thank the thousands of freedom-loving Americans who have sacrificed to rally outside the U.S. Capitol and across America against a government-takeover of healthcare. I — along with House Republicans — will still stand with the American people to fight against government-run healthcare. We will hold Democrats accountable for their actions. And we will fight for real healthcare reform that actually lowers healthcare costs. The American people deserve better.”
