Sessions Applauds Demise of Deem and Pass Scheme for Healthcare

March 20, 2010
Press Release

Washington, DC – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions today released the following statement in response to Democrats’ decision to drop their deem and pass scheme and allow an up or down vote on the Senate healthcare bill:

“The American people have made it clear that they will not let Democrats get away with trying to hide their vote on a government takeover of healthcare. Today the American people have won, wrestling a victory for democracy from the jaws of the Democrat political agenda. As cameras rolled in the House Rules Committee, Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats caved to the tsunami of public opposition rather than defend their wildly unpopular scheme in the public spotlight.

“A healthcare bill affecting every American and one-sixth of our economy deserves an up or down vote, and I applaud Democrats’ decision to allow democracy in the House of Representatives. I urge the Majority to listen to the American people and vote down a government-run healthcare bill that has already been soundly rejected across this nation.”
