This week, Hurricane Sandy swept through our nation devastating several communities, leaving millions without power and taking more than 50 American lives. In times of destruction and despair, the American people have always come together to help our neighbors rebuild. Below I have highlighted a few options for those looking to help assist in disaster relief and recovery:
1. Blood Donations: You can donate much-needed blood by scheduling a donation appointment in your area. For more information, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.
4. Donate Emergency Supplies: Several organizations are providing food, medical supplies and other necessary items to people in need. Some of the organizations are: AmeriCares, Catholic Charities USA, Direct Relief International, Feeding America and Operation Blessing International.
Additionally, the House Veterans Affairs Commmittee has put together information for our nation's Veterans who have been affected by the storm. If you have friends or family that are Veterans and in need of assistance, visit http://veterans.house.gov/
I am confident that the strength and resilience of the American people will continue to shine through these difficult times, as it has so many times before. My thoughts and prayers will continue to be with all of those affected by the storm and I extend my deepest gratitude to the first responders, local officials and volunteers.
