Washington, DC – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions today released the following statement after the House voted 244-188 for an “economic stimulus” bill totaling over $1.1 trillion (including interest):
“The American people will not be fooled: a trillion dollar government spending spree will not reduce unemployment or grow our economy out of deficit status. Laden with billions for everything from ACORN to global warming studies, this fundamentally-flawed economic plan provides only the assurance of another $1 trillion in national debt passed along to future generations.
“As the Party of ideas, Republicans in Congress offered a plan for fast-acting tax relief, limited government spending, and foundational credit and housing market solutions to help grow our economy and create jobs. In addition to helping American companies retain employees through immediate tax relief, Congress can aid long-term recovery by welcoming back—not punishing—the investor in the American marketplace.
“Instead of operating in a spirit of promised bipartisanship, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats gloated in their Majority status, refusing to consider Republican ideas for market-based job creation. Our response to this unilateral massive spending spree was simple: not a single Republican Member of the House of Representatives voted for this bill.
“Our nation is facing historic economic challenges, and unemployment is rising by the day. That is why I will continue to fight for real economic recovery solutions that will unfreeze credit, provide companies with more of their own resources, and unleash innovation and investment that create jobs for the American people.”
