Press Releases

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX-32), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, today released the following statement regarding House approval of his amendment to H.R. 4745, the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2015:

“As a part of my commitment to cut spending and demand accountability from federal government programs, today I offered an amendment on the House floor that would eliminate funding for the Amtrak route with the highest financial loss per rider of any route.  The Sunset Limited – which runs from New Orleans to Los Angeles – costs the American taxpayer $396.31 per rider, more than any other route in the United States.  In total, the Sunset Limited loses an average of over $40 million a year.  My amendment seeks to stop the Amtrak bailout train in its tracks.”

“Amtrak has counted on Americans’ hard-earned tax dollars to bankroll its inefficient business practices without accountability for far too long.  That is why I am pleased that the House adopted my amendment that will reform Amtrak and halt funding to its worst performing line.  American taxpayers deserve better.”
